Paint With Confidence

LIGHT & SHADOW ONLINE WORKSHOP
WITH PHIL STARKE

Light is an important part of painting.  It brings life to the painting, and drama to hold the viewer’s eye.

Shadows also play an important role.  Often times the artist focuses on the light in the painting and the shadows are neglected.

But when you learn how to create the element of light AND understand the color of shadows, you achieve that perfect balance for the drama you need to pull the viewer into your artwork.

And that’s what we all want.

Color also draws us into a painting, the bright colors of an autumn day or the deep blue greens of the ocean. But color can feel very elusive. It’s hard, sometimes, to mix colors that harmonize, and suggest the light without looking garish, or too dull.

It’s important to learn to mix the colors of light and shadow.

Once you understand how to bring light and shadow into your paintings, you might just discover what’s been missing in your artwork.

Thank you for always sharing your knowledge. I learn something every time I see one of your videos for the first time or the tenth.  Thanks again. - Gail M.

After watching many of Phil's videos and honing in on the way he mixes and uses color (from the color wheel), I set up a still life to see if I could see and mix the color I was seeing in a more logical way. I picked a couple of vases that had a difficult color to analyze. Before Phil, I would have been mixing many colors trying to get that particular color ... of course, not remembering what I had mixed! . So, I followed Phil's line of thought .. start with a color from the wheel. I am pleased with the ease I was able to "get the color". Thanks Phil for the excellent instruction on color!
